Finally, the interview I’ve been promising you for several weeks.

Following on from my recent reviews of Through The Mud & The Blood and it’s supplements, I finally got chance to sit down and have a telephone conversation with Richard Clarke of Too Fat Lardies.

We chat about Richard’s gaming background and how TFL was originally formed. We then discuss several of TFL’s rulesets, look at some of Richard’s rules design process and philosophy, and finally talk about what’s to come in the future.

And, of course, we ask the question that is on the mind of all serious wargamers at the moment…

Snow Tails – first game at Scimitar

One of my unplanned purchases (and yes, I don’t impulse buy all the time) at the UK Games Expo last weekend was Snow Tails. I had a demo of the game and liked both the game play and the presentation enough to buy it.

Last Wednesday rolled around, which meant Scimitar Wargames Club, and whilst I was keen to get many of my new purchases into play, with 5 player, Snow Tails was the obvious choice.

What can I say? We all loved it! The first game took a while (I shouldn’t have put trees on the track!) but once everyone had grasped the mechanics – which only took a few turns – it became a huge success.

Several of the players likened it to Knizia’s Circus Maximus, but with more playable mechanics – though still enough to think about and make it interesting. What was more surprising was that Tony (who has actually raced a dog sled) said the game was pretty accurate about what you needed to consider when doing the real thing.

I started to put the game away after we had played one game, only to be greeted by howls of protest. Needless to say, we played it for the rest of the night, and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

A surprise hit, and I’m now very glad that I bought it!

UK Games Expo

Well, the UK Games Expo has come and gone for another year. I’m going to be doing a feature on the show in the end-of-June podcast, but I just wanted to say a couple of things here in the mean time.

First of all, what a great show!

Fzzzt! A great new card game from Surprised Stare games

I had a fantastic time. It’s great to play games all weekend!And I played some great games – Sumeria, Fzzt! and Snow Tails all deserve a mention, though I think Sumeria was my favourite game of the show. Unfortunately I didn’t get to play either Automobile or Last Train to Wensleydale as those tables were packed all weekend.

The C&C Ancients tournament on Sunday was great fun – despite me being placed a mere 7th. However, 7 games in just over 6 hours was very intensive! Many thanks to Barry Ingram for a well organised day. Definitely be back next year.

Finally, it was great to meet everyone who came and said ‘Hi’. It was especially good to finally meet up with the guys from the ‘Into the Gamescape’ Podcast. We had a great chat and even got to play a game together!

Sumeria - My favourite game of the Expo

A highly recommended day – book it in your diary for next year.
