It’s what FFG call a ‘Living Card Game’, which means that the game uses Collectible Card Game mechanisms, but without the random collectible nature of games such as Magic: The Gathering or Yu-Gi-Oh.
In the game, players take control of a party of adventurers, using characters from the Lord of the Rings trilogy of novels, and work together to complete various quests.
These quests are of variable difficulty, some quite easy, others much more difficult, and part of the game is building decks of cards with abilities and allies that can defeat these quests.
Now, a while ago FFG published rules to create an ‘easy’ version of the game, for those players whose main aim in playing the game was to experience the adventure, rather than to try to defeat each quest with the optimum deck build. Now, it seems they have gone back to the original adventures and created a new ‘Nightmare’ mode for the game.
These ‘Nightmare Decks‘, which are available as Print on Demand expansions (in the same way the GenCon adventure packs were) use new themes and encounters to increase the difficulty level of the scenarios to offer a completely new challenge, which I suppose is only fair as there have been a whole host of new player cards released in the last couple of years.
Probably something for the completest, rather than the casual gamer – but they do look very interesting…
