D-Day remembered…

D-day70_logo_200x292You would be hard-pressed not to know that today marks the 70th Anniversary of the D-Day landings on the coast of Normandy in northern France during World War II.

As a boy I found the stories of the men who fought in WWII to be exciting. It captured my imagination, and was one of the primary reasons why I entered into the wargaming hobby.

As a man, and a wargamer, World War II is still my favourite period, and I’ve spent countless hours reading books and watching documentaries as I’ve researched various projects. I now find the stories of the men who fought in World War II to be, at the very least, inspiring. This week as I’ve  watched the programmes commemorating the events of D-Day on television, I’ve found myself moved to tears on more than one occasion.

Whilst this may be the last time that large-scale commemoration events are organised, let us ensure that we do not forget the sacrifice that was made by so many that we can enjoy the freedom that we have today.

“When you go home, tell them of us and say
For their tomorrow, we gave our today.”

“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.”
