I think you are right on the subject of firefly machine guns. In “By tank into Normandy” the author at one point had to defend a village against repeated infantry attacks with two fireflies and one regular Sherman, complaining about the Fireflies only being equipped with a coaxial machine gun. IIRC the brits didn’t mount the AA machine guns on their tanks at all because they didn’t want their tank commanders to pop out of the hatch now and then.
